Fancy as it gets – salads’ purpose ultimately is to push away the main course or dish.

You would not correctly eat salad before a main dish no more than plow a road before a snow.

Salad is for cleaning the system, not for cleansing the palate. It can be assisted by oil and vinegar. Salad served after a main course is to include cheese and crackers. You may add some pepper to it. It is said it can aid digestion.

Salad before meat with creamy dressing “to go with that,” may coat your palate and make you fat.

Salad is to be offered, served, and eaten (with or) after the main course.

(“Avoid spending your whole life eating your entrĂ©e with the third fork.”)
For large leaves you can use a knife.

Salad can be served in a bowl or on a plate. A salad bowl is the only bowl that can be correctly placed on a table directly without an underlying plate.
