Outclass the Competition

Practice giving approval. Give it. Give a hug. Hug peers more than subordinates. The first time you do so you can say, “Thanks. I'd like to give you a hug." When giving a hug, shake hands with your right hand. Place your left arm around the person's shoulder, and lean in the top part of your body. Avoid touching pelvises. Turn your head left. Hold the embrace for three to five seconds. Release it. Look this person in the eye. Smile. Step back. You can pause briefly, and then resume your conversation. Do whatever you were planning to do after the hug.

Avoid stroking, or patting a back. Socially there is a two-pat maximum.

Practice accepting approval. Allow a hug. Accept it, gracefully, (assuming it is not an act of sexual harassment.) Lean into it. If comfortable, reciprocate. Avoid acting as if you have just been zapped.
