Announce yourself by saying, a greeting for the time of day. Add, "My name is," or "I am," and follow with your first and last name. Do this when entering the reception area of a home where you are not known, nor expected, and/or when reminding someone you have met socially of your name. You may add, "We visited at So and so’s place not too long ago," or “I am a friend of...," and go on to provide the name of the person you mutually know.

You can announce/identify yourself to a junior person by your title and last name, or by the title and name that person is to use when addressing you. Do this when addressing a family member who is very young, a household staff member, a person you have not met socially, and/or when on business, when you are unwilling to have someone address you by your first name alone.

When someone calls you by your first name and it is not at your request you can say,” “What did you call me?” Do you know me? (Do you know the person you are calling?) When you call a person by a first name you are asking to speak to a child, a colleague, or to a friend. One can be inappropriate, the other inaccurate. You can add "In polite society you do not call a person by a first name unless asked. I did not do so. You are not a colleague and you are certainly not a friend." You may then say, "I am," and then follow with your title and last name. (I just had to rant.) You may wait until you are older before doing this.
