Outclass the Competition

A bow is used to acknowledge an introduction, or the presence of a person following the lead of the senior person. All bows are to be acknowledged. It can be performed while in place, and then a conversation may be continued. In the United States of America, a woman is to bow to a man first. In European culture, a man bows to a woman first. Look directly at the other person, and bow.

A man is to bow in the vein of clicking the heels together (only the motion is made,) and making a quick bend down from the hips, and making a bend up from the chin, as if the hip and neck had two hinges. Remain rigid between the neck and the back. Arms and hands are to be at the sides.

A woman is to bow with her hands folded in front of her legs, while bending down from the waist.

For informal occasions, a modified bow can be done, in lieu of handshaking, and will keep a person in good stead throughout life. It is to be a slight inclination of the head and shoulders, as if to relay the thought, "Why so it is you, how good to see you," and a smile.

A junior person can make the gesture of rising half way up to bow or to return a bow to a senior person. Then sit down. An elderly man may lean and face forward, and gravely bow his head, to acknowledge a senior person. Remain seated when bowing to a contemporary or junior person.

In Asian culture, a bow may precede or replace a handshake. People bow together. The bend is down from the chin. The body and head is lowered downward about sixty degrees. The lower the head: the greater the degree of politeness of the bow. It is accomplished with just a smile. It may be accomplished with the words, "How do you do?" An informal bow may be accompanied with the word, "Hello."

In some Asian cultures, a Wai: made by bringing the hands up together in an open handed prayer position, may be proffered. It is to be responded to in kind.

In informal America, the bow sometimes is replaced by a gesture of a raised glass facing the person whose presence is being acknowledged. Ultimately it is the same thing. Avoid doing a gesture of thumbs up in response to a bow. In more than one place this sign is not considered a good thing.

A man is to refrain from bowing to Royalty to whom he is not a subject. He can bow and have a bow returned when greeting an acquaintance.
